How to Tell If a Cat Is in Labor & Ready to Deliver

A pregnant cat may keep you guessing as the approaching labor and delivery draws near because symptoms and behavior can vary from cat to cat. Whether your cat has had kittens previously and her overall health will have an impact on how she tolerates the end of pregnancy, labor and delivery. Watch the queen (pregnant cat) carefully to assess her behavior so you can tell if your cat is in labor and ready to deliver.

Instructions

    • 1

Watch your cat for signs of agitation and restlessness. You may discern that she is uncomfortable by her behavior and actions. She may act nervous.

    • 2

Notice extra washing behavior as your cat washes her genital area more frequently. You may see increased vaginal discharge.

    • 3

Watch for a decreased interest in food during the final day before delivery.

    • 4

Take your cat's rectal temperature. If it is below 100 F, labor may be imminent.

    • 5

Notice where your cat goes to labor. Some cats go off alone and others stay near you for help and support.

    • 6

Watch for panting and pushing, signaling the births are imminent. Your cat may labor quietly or she may shriek as the kittens emerge.
