Instructions
Treat the matted fur when the cat appears relaxed. The cat may struggle or try to run away if it wants to play or do something else. Soothe the cat's anxieties by giving it catnip.
Groom the cat's fur with a soft-bristled brush. Brush the fur daily to prevent the knots and tangles from forming. Brush the fur gently to avoid causing discomfort to your feline.
Fill a spray bottle with water. Spray the tangled fur with water. Brush the wet fur to loosen the tangles.
Wash the cat with warm water and pet shampoo after you pre-treat the tangles with a spray bottle and brush. The warm water and shampoo will help loosen the tangles.
Apply cornstarch or talcum powder to any remaining tangles. Work the cornstarch into the fur with your fingers to loosen the knotted fur.
Cut the knot from the fur carefully. If you cannot loosen matted fur by brushing or bathing, you may need to cut the mat out. Locate the tangle in the fur and avoid cutting too close to the skin to prevent injuring the cat. Run a comb under the matted fur to help you determine where the skin and fur meet. Always cut away from the skin.
