How to Take Care of Matted Fur on Cats

While short-haired cats will generally tend to their own grooming needs, the coats of long-haired felines, such as Persians or Angora varieties, need more attention. Long-haired cats tend to get mats on their haunches and groin area, along their stomachs, behind their ears and under their collars. You can use a pet hair detangler to take care of matted fur on cats. Pet hair detangler is similar to hair conditioner used for human hair.

Instructions

    • 1

Comb as much lose hair from around the matted area as possible. Use short, shallow stokes with the comb, beginning at the tip of the hair and working the comb towards the base of the hair against the cat's skin.

    • 2

Apply the pet hair detangler to the matted area, according to the manufacture's directions. Gently massage the detangler into the cat's fur with your fingers.

    • 3

Repeat the combing process; begin at the ends of the matted hair and work inward. Once the mat has been removed, dry the area with a towel.

    • 4

Wipe any residual detangler from the comb and run the comb through the dried hair.

    • 5

Give the cat a break between working different areas of matted hair, as many cats do not like being groomed and will become impatient or intolerant.
