How to Remove Candle Wax From a Cat's Fur

Keep candles out of reach of your pets or use a candle warmer that does not produce melted wax. But when an accident happens like hot wax spilling on a cat's fur it is important to act quickly, calmly and smartly.

  • Warm bath
  • Towel
  • Fine tooth comb
  • Washcloth
  • Pet hair scissors (optional)
  • Blow dryer (optional)

      Put the cat in a warm bath. Do not make the water too hot, just warm enough to soften the wax. Do not use soap or shampoo. If the cat hates baths keep the water shallow and scoop the warm water onto the wax. Keep the cat in the warm bath until the wax begins to soften.

      Once the wax has softened wrap the cat in a towel and try to dry it off.

      Starting underneath the wax, gently pull the fine tooth comb through the hair to remove the wax. Wipe the comb off and continue removing the wax. Keep the cat wrapped up in the towel to prevent scratching and make it easier to control the cat. If the wax starts to harden use a warm washcloth to soften it again.
