Herbal Remedies for Cats With Flea Bites

Cat owners concerned about the environment or allergic reactions to synthetic drugs by their pets can turn to herbs to treat the irritation of flea bites. A number of herbal remedies incorporate ingredients shown to alleviate the itchy sensations caused by flea bites. Herbal remedies have the further advantage of being available over the counter without a prescription.
  1. Flea Bite Dermatitis

    • Fleas are an extremely common parasite of cats, and although many cats appear not to suffer from the bites, some develop an allergic reaction to the saliva of fleas. In its most severe form, this allergic reaction is known as flea bite dermatitis. The saliva left behind after a flea bite can contain up to 15 different allergens that can cause reactions in sensitive cats.

    Matricaria Recutita and Galium Aperine

    • Also termed German chamomile, Matricaria recutita grows to a height of 20 inches and has feathery foliage with daisylike, scented flowers. Matricaria recutita contains anti-inflammatory properties and, once applied to the affected area, has a cleansing and soothing action. Although there is no standard dosage for chamomile applied to the skin, a paste containing 3 percent to 10 percent chamomile flower heads is typically recommended. The herb Galium aperine is also considered a cleansing tonic and blood purifier. This herb, which is dosed in liquid form, treats allergic dermatitis by removing toxins from the circulatory system. Add it to a cat's food as per directions for the strength of the preparation you are using.

    Calendula officinalis

    • The marigold herb, or Calendula officinalis, has anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-viral properties. In cats suffering from severe cases of allergic dermatitis, marigold will assist with the regeneration of damaged skin tissue. Calendula cream is best applied topically to the bites by rubbing it gently into the cat's skin.

    Hamamelis Virginianum (Witch Hazel)

    • Hamamelis virginianum, or witch hazel, contains anti-bacterial properties which help to prevent infection that may have set in due to flea bites. Witch hazel is applied as a cream directly to the cat's skin.
