Instructions

Litter train your cat. It is imperative to make sure your cat is not urinating in areas of your home that may not be visible to you. Purchase a litter box, odor-eliminating cat litter and a carbon or activated charcoal-based odor remover.

    • 2

Place the odor remover near the litter. Make sure it is in a closed container, that has small holes in it, so that the cat does not get into it. By placing the odor remover at the source, it will kill the odor as soon as it hits the litter box.

    • 3

Remove any visible urine that may be on your floor or in your carpet; hidden cat urine stains may be causing an odor to circulate into the air. Take a bowl and mix 3/4 cup of water and 1/4 cup of vinegar and saturate any old urine spots on your rug. If you have wood floor, mop your floor with the vinegar and water. Let dry.

    • 4

Sprinkle baking soda over your entire rug and/or wooden floor. Then mix 3/4 cup of three percent hydrogen peroxide solution with one teaspoon of dish detergent.

Patch test your floor and/or rug by using your finger to apply a small amount of the peroxide and detergent over a small section: This will assure the mixture will not ruin your rug or floor. If staining does not occur, continue to apply a small amount of the mixture across all rugs and floors.

Use an old cloth, towel or brush to push the baking soda down into your carpet. Once finished, vacuum the whole carpet thoroughly. If the odor does not disappear, repeat steps one, two and three.
