How to Cut Out a Hair Mat on a Cat

Long-hair cats tend to mat more easily and need daily grooming, especially during the springtime, which is shedding season. When you find any matted hair on your feline, remove it immediately. Matted hair is unhygienic, and can lead to skin lesions and infections, among other things.

Instructions

    • 1

Brush the cat's hair to remove as much of the mat as possible. Brush the entire cat. This helps you locate all the mats that need to be cut out.

    • 2

Slide a fine-tooth comb in between the mat and the cat's skin. The comb serves as a protective barrier once you begin cutting.

    • 3

Cut the mat out of the cat's hair. Work quickly. Talk to your cat in a soothing voice as you're grooming her.

    • 4

Place one blade through the base of the mat and cut up and away from the skin. This method should be used if you cannot place a comb through the base of the mat.
