How to Remove Hair Mats

Hair mats can be a problem in any animal with long hair, whether it be a dog, cat or even some rodents. While it may seem hair mats are merely a cosmetic problem, they can actually cause extreme discomfort as the hair tightens and pulls on the skin. It takes patient and a steady hand to properly remove a hair mat without causing damage to the animal's skin. As long as you have the proper tools, you can remove mats in a harmless manner.

Instructions

    • 1

Brush the matted hair with a mat brush to remove as much of the matting as possible. Brush the hair around the mat as well. Depending on how bad the matting is, you may be able to completely brush it out.

    • 2

Stick a comb beneath the mat to create a barrier between the mat and the skin. The comb will help protect the skin from damage.

    • 3

Place a pair of sharp scissors on top of the comb. Cut the mat off with the scissors. Depending on the size of the mat, you may need to make several tiny snips rather than one big snip.
