How to Trim The Claws of a Cat With a Dremel

Some cat owners don't feel comfortable clipping the cat's claws because they worry about cutting too much and hurting the cat. One alternative is to try sanding off the claws using a specialized dremel nail grinder. A dremel pet nail groomer uses rotary action and a grinding drum to file down a cat's nails. Because it works little by little, the cat owner has more control over how much of the nails to remove and is there is less danger of possibly hurting the cat.

Instructions

Get the cat used to the nail grinder and having it paws handled. This will minimize fear and struggling when you finally cut its claws. Touch its paws often and use the nail grinder to pet the cat so that it associates the device with a positive experience. When the cat seems comfortable with the nail grinder and having its paws touched, you can then try to grind its claws.

Turn on the dremel nail grinder before handling the cat.

Hold one paw and squeeze the paw pad until one claw extends out and becomes fully visible.

    • 4

Hold the nail groomer against the claw, taking it off the claw every few seconds to make sure the nail doesn't get uncomfortably hot for the cat. Continue until you achieve the desired nail length. Be careful not to grind into the quick of the nail, which is the sensitive pink area in the center of the nail.
