The Best Way to Remove Matted Hair on a Cat

Domestic shorthair cats typically require little grooming. However, extra grooming might be required for long-haired cats. If not brushed daily, long-haired cats' fur mats easily. Not only does it look unpleasant, mats can be very painful for your cat. The best way to remove mats is through extensive combing.
  1. Use a Comb or Slicker Brush

    • Detangle as much of the mat as possible with a comb or slicker brush. Pet stores also sell tools especially for detangling mats, such as a shedding blade or a dematting rake. Try to break large mats into smaller ones. Make sure your cat̵7;s fur is dry before attempting to get rid of its mats. Wet fur can make the matting worse, because it makes the mats tighter. Add corn starch to help loosen tight mats.

    Cut It Out

    • Cut the mat out with scissors only as a last resort. Slide a comb between the mat and the skin and cut the hair between the mat and the comb. Brush out the coat again.

It is easy to accidentally cut the cat̵7;s skin with scissors because the mats form very close to the skin. However, you might need to trim around the mats to make it more manageable.

    Professional Help

    • Go to professional groomer or veterinarian for help. Your cat̵7;s coat might need to be shaved for severe matting.
