Things You'll Need
- Bath mat or rubber place-mat
- Wide-toothed metal comb
- Fine-toothed metal comb
- Fingernail scissors
- Cat treats
Instructions
Place your Himalayan on the bathmat or rubber placemat. This way, your cat can scratch and scramble to her heart's content, but you will still be in control of her. If you groom your cat on a hardwood floor or carpet, you risk the chance of your cat scratching the floor or racing into another room to hide.
Using a metal wide-toothed comb, gently brush your cat thoroughly. Be sure to immediately remove any hair that has shed and is in your comb. The idea is to remove as much excess fur as possible, so knots will not form.
Remove knots or mats as you are combing. Use fingernail scissors to remove the knots, rather than trying to comb them out with a comb. Like humans, cats have very sensitive skin and will not react well if you tug at the knots. After you have carefully cut out a mat in your cat's fur, brush out the remaining tangles to smooth the fur into the rest of the coat.
Using a fine-toothed comb, continue brushing to get out any additional loose fur. There should be no tangles in your cat's coat at this point. Using a fine-toothed comb will make your Himalayan's fur shiny and sleek.
Give your Himalayan a treat for a job well done. When you are ready to groom her the following day, she will remember the treat and brushing will soon become an enjoyable experience.
