Removing Paint Off of Cat Fur

Paint stuck in a cat's fur can be very harmful because cats frequently bathe themselves and may ingest potentially toxic substances if not properly removed. Knowing how to remove paint from cat fur quickly can help your pet avoid dangerous health problems.
  1. Cutting Out the Paint

    • Dried paint can sometimes be easily and safely cut out without exposing the cat to any chemicals or water. Have someone hold the cat down firmly while you gently and carefully cut away the painted fur with a small scissors. Do not cut too close to the cat's skin. This does not harm the cat, and the fur will grow back quickly.

    Oil Removal

    • Wet paint should be removed before the cat has a chance to groom itself and ingest the paint. Place a small amount of vegetable or mineral oil on the affected fur and rub it gently with paper towels and repeat until all of the paint has been removed from the fur. Wash the area with soap and water to remove any remaining oil.

    Bath

    • In some cases it may be necessary to bathe your cat to remove the paint fully. Fill a washtub with warm water and gently lower the cat into it. Use cat shampoos to wash the paint from the cat's fur and then rinse with warm water. Dry the cat with a towel until completely dry. Cats rarely enjoy baths, so it might be necessary to have someone assist you.

    Professional Groomer

    • If all efforts to remove paint from a cat's fur fail or if the cat is difficult to deal with, take the cat to a professional groomer. A groomer is trained to clean the cat's fur thoroughly without harming the animal in any way.
