How to Groom Knots off a Cat's Belly

While cats are capable of self-grooming and typically demand a minimal amount of human interference, there are times when oil and dirt build up can lead to tangles and knots on a cat's abdomen. While regular brushing can keep knots to a minimum, this does not always prevent them from occurring. Knot removal is important because knots can cause cats pain and discomfort and potentially lead to infection if hair-pulling leads to broken skin.

Instructions

    • 1

Approach your cat calmly and turn it on its side or back, so the stomach knot is accessible to you.

    • 2

Use a soft-bristled cat brush to gently work at the knot to see if it can be easily untangled. Do not tug very hard as this may cause your cat pain and make your cat less likely to allow you to brush it.

    • 3

Work in some cornstarch into the knot if gentle brushing is not enough.

    • 4

Loosen the knot gently with your fingers as much as possible; then use your cat brush to finish the loosening process.

    • 5

Take your cat to a veterinarian or animal groomer for knot removal if the knot is too tangled and tight for home removal. An animal professional can shave it off safely.
