Things You'll Need
- Two "C" batteries
- Pet treats
- Styptic pencil of styptic powder (optional)
Instructions
Remove the cap that is located on the bottom of the PediPaws device by unscrewing it counterclockwise. Install two "C" batteries -- one on top of the other lined up in the same direction -- inside the device. Screw the bottom cap into place.
Sit or lay next to your pet and feed it a couple of pet treats. Leave the PediPaws device off but keep it nearby so the pet can get used to it. Turn on the device, show it to them and give your pet another treat. Do this for a couple of days until your pet gets used to sound that the PediPaws device makes.
Place your pet next to you or in your lap, for smaller pets, on the day you are ready to clip its nails. Give your pet a treat, talk to it in low tones, and turn on the PediPaws device.
Screw the orange-colored protective cap tightly into place prior to filing your pet's nails. Take your pet's paw in one hand and press on the foot pad slightly to expose the claws.
Insert a nail into the opening on the protective cap. Make a rounded up-and-down motion with the PediPaws device. File the nail for up to five seconds (to keep friction to a minimum) and remove it from the device.
Repeat Step 5 for all remaining nails on the first paw. Go back and file each nail again -- for no longer than five seconds -- until the nail is the desired length and shape (the pointed tip should be removed and the nail should be no closer than a 1/4 inch away from the quick). Stop filing the nail if the nail bed starts to turn pink, as you are getting close to the quick.
File all of the nails on your pet's other paw (or paws, if you are filing the nails on the back legs as well) in the same manner.
Turn off the PediPaws device, unscrew the orange protective cap, empty the filings and replace the protective cap.
