How to Cut Mats From a Cat

Removing mats from your pet cat's fur sounds like an easy task, but don't be fooled. If you don't use proper grooming techniques, you can easily cause harm to your cat by removing more than just the matted, dirty fur. If you can't afford to take your pet to a professional groomer, you can groom your pet in the comfort of your own home. This will cause less stress on you, your wallet and your beloved cat.

Instructions

    • 1

Brush your cat's fur with a grooming brush.

    • 2

Use gentle strokes to untangle some of the smaller mats and to spread natural oils throughout the fur.

    • 3

Allow your cat to rest after brushing its fur for at least an hour. This will help your cat remain calm.

    • 4

Trim the mats from your cat's fur using an electric trimmer or razor. The quieter the razor, the less stress your pet will feel. Do not completely shave the fur down to the skin, but remove just the mat.

    • 5

Brush your pet's fur and give him a bath to remove any lingering dirt, oils or anything sticky.
