How to Groom Persians With Oily Hair

Persian breed cats are popular, friendly felines, but have the longest hair of almost any domesticated cat. The Persian's hair can reach as long as 8 inches. Their hair is so long that they cannot properly groom themselves, especially if it becomes oily. In this case, you can specially groom the hair for enhanced luster and cleanliness.

Bathe the cat regularly as the key to groom your Persian cat with oily hair. A good rule of thumb is to bathe them as often as every two weeks and not less frequently than once a month. It is especially important with kittens to get them used to baths. Regular baths will also reduce parasites and disease.

Use caution when bathing the cat to not be too abrasive. The cat will naturally clean itself but cannot reach all its hairs. Focus on the hairs that the cat cannot get to.

Apply a specialty shampoo in the bath that is made for cats with oily hair. The shampoos can be found at your local pet supply store. Do not use dog shampoo, which is too strong.

Groom out the matting of the cat with a comb. Brush with caution and enjoy the lustrous hair.
