How to Bathe a Smelly Cat

Although cats are capable of grooming themselves, their fur can still become coated in dirt and food, leading to unpleasant odors. Occasionally bathing your cat is an important part of maintaining your cat's overall good health. However, your cat may not be receptive to bathing and prefer to remain smelly. Enlisting the help of a friend or family member can help prevent escape by your cat once it hits the water.

Instructions

    • 1

Clip your cat's nails. This will prevent it from seriously scratching you during bath time.

    • 2

Comb your cat to remove excess debris and dirt; combing also may relax your cat.

    • 3

Place a rubber bath mat in your kitchen sink to keep your cat firmly planted and prevent slipping. Gather your bathing supplies: water pitcher, liquid cat shampoo, washcloth and towel.

    • 4

Place your cat in the sink. Apply lukewarm water to your cat's coat. Use a pet-friendly liquid shampoo specifically designed to eliminate odors. Lather the shampoo onto your cat's fur. Pour water over your cat's body with a water pitcher to rinse the soap off. Use a washcloth to wash your cat's face, taking special care to avoid splashing water onto its face.

Towel-dry your cat. You also can opt to use a blow dryer on its lowest setting if your cat will allow it. Use a brush to comb out any tangles once your cat is dry.
