How to Groom a Himalayan

Himalayan cats are the product of Persian cats being crossed with Siamese cats. The result is that Himalayan cats have the long hair of a Persian cat and the blue eyes and point coloration of a Siamese cat. The Himalayan's long coat of fur can be difficult to maintain. It is important to exercise daily maintenance and regular grooming with your Himalayan cat to keep its coat free of knots and mats.

Instructions

    • 1

Set your Himalayan cat on a rubber bathmat. This way, if you groom your cat on a hardwood floor, you will not have to worry about your cat scratching the floor with its claws.

    • 2

Gently brush your cat with a wide-toothed flea comb. Remove excess hair from the comb as you go. Comb out as much hair as possible to prevent knots from forming. Use your fingers to gently remove any mats or knots.

    • 3

Clip your cats claws with a cat nail clipper. It is important to trim your cat's nails for the safety of you and your pet. Make sure you do not cut into the quick, the pink bloodline in the nail, which will cause the nail to bleed if damaged.

    • 4

Loosely wrap a towel around the cat to keep it from scratching while clean out its ears. Carefully wipe the interior of the cat's ears with a product meant for this purpose following the label instructions. Make sure you do not penetrate too deeply into the ear.

    • 5

Bathe your Himalayan cat after you have trimmed its claws, combed the fur and removed all the knots and mats. Use a shampoo meant for long-haired cats. If you are unsure what kind of shampoo to use, ask your vet. Make sure you do not get the shampoo in the cat's eyes, nose, mouth or ears.

Towel dry or blow dry your cat's fur on a low setting.
