Most Critical Period
-
As you might expect, the most critical socialization period for cats is while they are still kittens. To be exact, it is the period of time between 2 and 7 weeks of age. At this point, kittens should be handled gently for a brief period of time daily
Advantages
-
According to the Humane Society of the United States, kittens who are handled gently for 15 to 40 minutes daily during the first 7 weeks of their lives are more likely to develop larger brains. They are more playful and exploratory and better learners. The ASPCA states that gentle, early handling helps stimulate other aspects of physical development as well. Kittens who have this advantage open their eyes and begin exploring earlier. They are also less fearful of strangers and new experiences later in life.
Toys and Play
-
Kittens should be introduced to toys at 3 to 4 weeks old. Change them out regularly so that they do not get bored. Cardboard boxes, paper shopping bags and packing paper can be just as amusing as purchased toys. At this point, you should also teach kittens that fingers and toes are not toys. If you do not, it will become much more painful for you and all humans when those claws and teeth grow up. Make sure to have a toy on hand to distract kittens who nip fingers or go for toes. Doing so redirects his instincts to an appropriate and acceptable target.
Feral Kittens
-
Feral kittens can grow up to be wonderful pets who are just as tame as any other cat. If taken in by 6 to 7 weeks of age, feral kittens can easily be tamed. They quickly learn that you are their new food source and caregiver. Once they begin to associate you with food, they will allow more handling and affection, and you will have a friend for life.
