How to Reset an Obese Cat's Metabolism

Obese cats are at risk for many health problems such as diabetes. Resetting a cat's metabolism does not happen overnight. It is a gradual change in feeding and daily care habits for both you and your cat. Over time, your cat's increased activity and portion control will keep her metabolism functioning at a faster rate, and she will become energetic and full of health. Before making any drastic changes to your cat's diet, consult your veterinarian.

Control the food your cat consumes. Cats are carnivorous animals and therefore excel on a high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet. Choose food that contains real meat instead of grain as the primary ingredient. This will satisfy your cat's hunger, and she will need less food as a result. Feed your cat two to four small meals per day instead of leaving food for her to eat when she chooses. Feed canned cat food instead of dry, as canned food contains more protein.

    • 2

Replace traditional cat treats with homemade, protein-rich treats such as small pieces of cooked chicken. Many cat treats are loaded with fillers that do not satiate your cat. Be careful to feed your cat only when she has earned a treat. If you treat her for meowing or appearing to be hungry, it will reinforce bad behavior. You may also choose to stop giving your cat treats entirely.

Play with your cat. For a cat to lose weight and live a more healthful life, she must burn more calories than she consumes. Purchase interactive toys such as feathers on long sticks or strings, and spend 15 to 20 minutes per day playing with your cat. If your cat tires quickly, begin with a five-minute play session and gradually increase playtime when she exhibits more energy. Your cat's metabolism will speed up naturally if she is on a daily exercise regimen.
