How to Keep an Anemic Feline Comfortable

Anemia in felines can be caused by several different conditions, including blood loss due to trauma, infection or illness. Anemia occurs when the animal does not have enough red blood cells to transport adequate oxygen through the body. In some cases, anemia may be a side effect of health problems such as the feline leukemia virus, kidney or renal failure. Anemic cats tend to be weak and lethargic with little appetite and pale gums and tongue. It is important to keep anemic cats as comfortable as possible in order to minimize discomfort and encourage recovery.
  1. Diagnosis

    • The most important thing to do is obtain proper veterinary treatment if you suspect your cat may be suffering from anemia. There are two primary types of feline anemia. Regenerative anemia occurs when the cat's body recognizes the problem and attempts to produce more red blood cells to alleviate the condition. Non-regenerative anemia is a chronic condition that occurs when.the cat's body does not produce enough red blood cells. Your veterinarian will be able to perform a basic blood test to check the number of red blood cells in your cat's blood. This test will determine whether or not your pet is anemic, as well as how many immature red blood cells, called reticulocytes, the cat has in its system. An anemic cat with a high reticulocyte percentage probably has regenerative anemia. A low reticulocyte percentage implies non-regenerative anemia is the problem. Because treatment varies, proper diagnosis by your veterinarian is crucial.

    Obtain Proper Treatment

    • Once your veterinarian has determined the cause of your cat's anemia, he will help you create a treatment plan that is specifically designed to meet the needs of your cat. This may involve dietary changes, nutritional supplementation with minerals or vitamins, wormer for severe parasite infestations or prescription medication. In severe cases, your cat may require a blood transfusion. It is important to follow your veterinarian's treatment plan when caring for your anemic cat.

    Basic Neccessities

    • Anemic cats do not have a lot of energy and can benefit from having all their necessary care items placed in the same location. For example, an anemic cat may not have the energy to cross the house to get to its food bowl or litter box, so these items should ideally be grouped together along with a cat bed and any other items your cat regularly uses.

    Rest

    • Your anemic feline is unlikely to want to spend a lot of time running around and may suffer from a severe lack of energy. In order to keep your cat as comfortable as possible, you should make sure your cat's environment is completely safe and free of possible predators or other animals that may aggravate or chase your cat. This includes other pets and children. Create a safe space for your cat to stay where it can relax and rest without being stressed by other animals or people.
