How to Open a Cat's Mouth for Teeth Brushing

Many cats don't enjoy getting their teeth brushed. They will often fight and run away when a toothbrush is poked in their mouth. And in those instances when they don't fight, they would rather chew and play with the brush. Getting your cat to accept a cleaning can take many attempts, but with patience you can get its mouth open for a good scrubbing.

Instructions

    • 1

Set the toothbrush out and allow your cat to play with it. Your cat will begin to associate the toothbrush with a non-threatening object.

    • 2

Dip your finger in tuna water or chicken broth. Allow the cat to lick the food off your finger. As it is enjoying the treat, ease your finger into its mouth and rub its teeth and gums with your finger. Do this once a day, for at least three days.

    • 3

Wrap gauze around your finger. Dip the wrapped finger in tuna water or chicken broth.

    • 4

Allow your cat to lick your wrapped finger. Put the wrapped finger into its mouth and gently rub its teeth in a circular motion. Do this at least three more times, over a period of three days.

    • 5

Dip the toothbrush or other cleaning item, such as a sponge or pad, into tuna water or chicken broth. Allow the cat to lick the item. Do this at least three more times over a period of three days, or until the cat is used to the texture of the item.

    • 6

Add pet toothpaste to your finger, and allow your cat to lick it off. Then apply some of the product to your cat's gum line with your finger.

    • 7

Add pet toothpaste to the brush or other dental item. Call your cat over for a treat and attempt to brush. Start with just the upper canine teeth. Be gentle and use circular motions. Then move on to the rest of the teeth once your cat gets used to the brushing.

Reward your cat with a treat she enjoys after she has allowed you to brush her teeth. She will begin to associate the process with her favorite treat, and it will become less difficult to brush her teeth.
