Instructions
Stay relaxed and calm prior to the euthanization procedure. While you may want to cry and express your emotions at the pending loss of your beloved pet, your cat can sense this distress and it will make it agitated and upset as well. Remaining calm will allow your cat to also calm down before the procedure.
Spray a calming synthetic cat pheromone spray on the inside of your cat's carrier 15 minutes before placing the cat inside to travel to the veterinarian. Concentrate the spray on all four corners of the carrier, with two sprays on the top and bottom. The pheromones mimic those of a cat's cheeks, providing the cat with a feeling of comfort and reassurance.
Administer a calming flower essence 30 to 60 minutes prior to the procedure. Some sprays come with a dropper, others with a spray. Place two sprays or four drops of the flower essence directly on the cat's tongue to calm it.
Give your cat an aromatherapy massage at home and in the veterinarian's office before the procedure. Spritz your hands lightly with a calming chamomile hydrosol and very gently massage the cat's back, sides and head. Watch for any signs of pain due to extensive illness or injury.
Play soothing classical music CD or collection of digital classical music for your cat at home prior to leaving for the veterinarian's office. If possible, ask your veterinarian if you can bring a small, portable music player to play the calming songs in the office near your cat prior to and during the procedure.
