How to Remove Glass From a Cat's Paw

Having a cat as a pet requires you to keep the cat healthy, happy and safe. The curious nature of cats means that some cats can get into situations which cause harm. A cat that has walked through broken glass can get glass shards stuck in their paws. If this happens, you must help remove the glass, wither on your own or by getting the cat to a veterinarian.

Instructions

    • 1

Make sure the cat is not bleeding excessively. If the cat is leaving full paw prints in blood, get the cat to a veterinarian right away. Make sure the cat is overall in good health as additional harm may have been incurred.

    • 2

Place one large towel over your lap. Wrap the cat in another towel to help protect yourself against the cat scratching or biting due to being under stress and scared. Turn the cat over or away from you, depending on which paw has the glass in it.

    • 3

Hold the injured paw in one hand and shine a bright light on the paw to find the glass as the light will reflect off of the glass. Use a magnifying glass to help you gauge the depth, position and direction of the glass.

    • 4

Use tweezers to grasp the glass. Pull the glass out of the cat's paw by grabbing the glass as close to the cat's skin as possible. You may need to use slanted or pointed tweezers depending on the size of the glass.

    • 5

Soak a cotton ball in hydrogen peroxide. Dab the peroxide on to the areas where you removed the glass. Watch the cat walk and take the cat to a vet if the cat continues limping, wincing in pain or crying after a few hours have passed after removing the glass.
