Antibiotics
-
There are several antibiotics a veterinarian may prescribe to treat your cat's urinary track infection. Some of the antibiotics are prescription while others are nonprescription. The nonprescription antibiotics can be purchased at a pet store, or they may be ordered through a pet supply company on the Internet. Cephalexin, Amoxicillin, Amoxi drops, Ciprofloxicin and Baytril are the ones commonly prescribed.
Cephalexin
-
Cephalexin attacks the bacteria in the cat's body by damaging the bacteria's protective walls. This attack on the walls of the bacteria lead to the bacteria's death. Other names for this antibiotic include Zartan, Biocef, Panixine and Keflex. Cephalexin should not be taken with certain other drugs. Therefore, do not treat your cat with this drug if it is on some other drug without checking with a professional.
Amoxicillin and Amoxi drops
-
Amoxicillin and Amoxi drops are penicillin based antibiotics; if a penicillin allergy is present in your cat, this is not the antibiotic your veterinarian will prescribe. Amoxicillin and Amoxi drops work in the same manner as other antibiotics. This particular antibiotic is quickly absorbed into the cat's system, according to Pfizer Animal Health. It attacks the harmful bacterias in the cat's body and the bacteria die off, leaving your cat free of the urinary track infection.
Ciprofloxicin
-
Ciprofloxicin fights bacteria in the cat's body like the other antibiotics. However, several health conditions involving organs in the cat's body may prevent your veterinarian from prescribing this antibiotic. Make your veterinarian aware of any conditions your cat may suffer from because Ciprofloxicin might contribute to an existing problem. Other names for this antibiotic include Cipro, Cipro XR, Cipro Cystitis Pack and Proquin XR.
Baytril
-
Baytril is a newer class of antibiotics. Baytril is also available without a prescription, making it a convenient and effective choice for treating your cat's infection. It has been successful in healing cats with UTIs and other ailments involving bacterial infections. This antibiotic can be administered orally, like the other antibiotics, or through the ear with a dropper.

Antibiotic for Cat UTI
Cats, like humans, suffer from urinary track infections. These infections are treated with antibiotics prescribed by a veterinarian. In order to treat a UTI successfully, the antibiotics prescribed must be given according to the veterinarian's directions. Treatment of the infection will provide your cat with relief from the uncomfortable symptoms a UTI. If your cat begins to urinate outside of its liter box, there's a good chance it has a UTI and an antibiotic might be in order.
