How to Grow Rye Oats for Cats

Indoor cats will stay away from potentially toxic house plants if you provide rye oats for them to munch on. Like outdoor cats, house cats like to chew on grass to satisfy their cravings. Rye oats and other green grasses contain enzymes, vitamins, minerals and amino acids that cats need to stay healthy. You can satisfy their hunger for greens by providing a live salad in the form of rye grass.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a shallow pot with potting soil. Spread 1 to 2 tbsp. of rye grass seeds evenly on top of the soil. Cover the seeds lightly with soil.

    • 2

Moisten the soil and seed mixture thoroughly and allow it to drain. Cover the pot loosely with plastic wrap. Place the pot in a warm, dark location, such as in a kitchen cabinet.

    • 3

Leave the pot in dark location for three to four days. Add water as needed to keep the soil moist, but do not give it too much water. Make sure the pot is draining properly.

    • 4

Remove the plastic wrap from the pot when the seeds begin to sprout. Move the pot to a sunny location and add just enough water to keep the soil moist.

    • 5

Place the pot in a sunny location that is accessible to your cat once the sprouts are 3 to 4 inches high. Continue to keep the soil moist. Trim the grass with scissors when it begins to wither. This will extend its life.
