My Cat Is Limping From a Sprain

Sprains often occur due to an accident, such as a fall or being hit by a car. While some accidents are unavoidable, keeping your cat safe and healthy may help your cat to avoid future injuries. Feed your cat a healthy food and limit treats. Keeping your cat at a healthy weight will reduce the risk of injury.
  1. Symptoms

    • Sprains can range in severity from a slight limp that goes away after a few days to an inability to move the injured leg. In addition to limping, symptoms of a sprain may include swelling and joints that feel warm to the touch. Your cat may also bite or cry when you touch the sprained leg.

    Veterinary Care

    • Cats limping from a sprain should always be taken to the veterinarian. Keep your cat in a quiet area inside your home. Do not allow it to run or jump until you are able to seek medical care. Your veterinarian may place your cat on the floor so that he can monitor your cat's movements to determine the extent of the injury. An X-ray may also be needed. Your vet may also numb the injured area so that he can perform an extensive physical exam without causing additional pain.

    Treatment

    • Treatment for a sprain will depend upon the severity of the injury. Mild sprains may only require a few days of rest and some anti-inflammatory medication to reduce swelling. More severe sprains may require a splint and several weeks of rest, in addition to medications. If your cat's sprain is so severe that it is unable to walk, surgery may be necessary to repair damaged ligaments.

    At-Home Care

    • Once you are home with your injured pet after receiving medical care, follow all directions given by the veterinarian. You may need to give your pet oral medication. If your cat is given a splint, you will be responsible for keeping the splint clean and in good condition. If your pet is unable to walk, keep it inside to reduce its risk of injury. Keep it in a comfortable room close to food, water and a litter box. Do not let your cat go up or down stairs.
