How to Collect a Stool Sample From a Feline

Keep your cat healthy by taking it regularly to the veterinarian for checkups. Part of a regular checkup may involve bringing in stool samples to test for worms and other parasites. Because cats use litter boxes, obtaining a stool sample can be complicated. While many veterinarians won't balk at finding kitty litter mixed in with the stool, it's possible to get an uncontaminated sample.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean your cat's litter box, removing all traces of regular litter.

    • 2

Shred enough newspaper to cover the bottom of the litter box. If you don't have newspaper handy, shred notebook or printer paper instead. Use a paper shredder or tear strips by hand.

    • 3

Place the shredded paper in the litter box.

    • 4

Watch your cat closely. After it has a bowel movement, use a cat litter scoop to put its stool into a plastic storage bag. For the best results, use a bag that zips or seals closed. Leave in any scraps of newspaper or pick them out.
