Feline Problems: Bumps on the Shoulder Bone

Cats can develop health issues at any age. Some health problems are specific to certain feline breeds, while other issues such as lumps on the body can affect any breed. Lumps or bumps that appear on a cat's shoulder area can be caused by a bug bite or other simple problem, but they can also be indicative of a serious issue such as cancer. Though some feline health issues are not serious, any time you feel that your cat needs medical attention, take it to the veterinarian right away.
  1. Reaction to Vaccine

    • Cats can have reactions to vaccine or other injections. The cat's tissue becomes inflamed, and swelling can appear at the injection site. Monitor your cat closely after vaccinations. While typically not serious, reactions can lead to larger issues such as abscess or cancerous-cell formation, so keep an eye on your cat's condition and visit the veterinarian if you are unsure.

    Abscess

    • A lump on the shoulder blade can be caused by an abscess resulting from an infected wound. Pass your hand over the area to test for any heat radiating from the lump. Heat typically indicates abscess. An abscess can be very serious if left untreated, so take your cat to the veterinarian right away.

    Cysts or Tumors

    • Cats can be affected by cysts or tumors forming in the body, sometimes due to trauma and sometimes for no obvious reason. These cysts or tumors can be benign and harmless or malignant and serious. A veterinarian will need to check your cat to determine their nature.

    Cancer

    • The most serious cause of lumps on a cat's shoulder area is cancer. Cats are commonly affected by lymphoma, skin cancer and mammary cancer. To diagnose your cat with cancer, the veterinarian will perform thorough testing and evaluation.
