What Do You Use to Get Skunk Spray Off Cats?

Outdoor cats are often sprayed by skunks, bringing home that unpleasant skunk odor that permeates every inch of your home. Bathing usually removes skunk odor from your cat's fur, though it may take several baths. If one of the following methods does not completely remove the skunk odor, try another method until the odor is completely removed.
  1. Preparation

    • Most cats hate baths, and since your cat may need to undergo several bathing sessions to remove all of the skunk odor, it is important to prepare before the bathing begins. Place your cat in a crate or cat carrier so that it does not spread the skunk smell throughout the house. Remove any fabrics that might absorb the skunk smell from the room where you will be bathing your cat; this includes fabric shower curtains, bath mats or towels. If possible, ask someone to help you with the bathing process. Use towels and washcloths to bathe your cat that you do not mind throwing away, as they may be ruined by the smell of skunk. Gather your cleaning ingredients before you begin.

    Vinegar

    • Vinegar is an effective deodorizer that will remove skunk smell from your cat, though it may take several bathing sessions. Fill your bathtub or sink with a mixture of vinegar and warm water. Place your cat in the water for several minutes to remove all odors. Use a small cup to carefully pour water on your cat's head; avoid getting water in its eyes. After a good soaking, empty the tub and fill with fresh water. Bathe your cat with a regular shampoo.

    Tomato Juice and Soda

    • Tomato juice removes skunk odor from cats. To begin, bathe your cat using its regular shampoo. Next, fill the sink or tub with tomato juice, and let your cat soak in the juice for several minutes. Bathe your cat using its regular shampoo when it is done soaking in the tomato juice.

As an alternative to tomato juice, which can be messy, try soaking your cat for several minutes in lemon lime soda after first bathing it regularly. After soaking in the soda, wash your cat as you normally would.

    Baking Soda and Peroxide

    • Use baking soda and peroxide to remove skunk odor from your cat. Begin by mixing 1 cup of baking soda with 1 tsp. of dish washing detergent with 1 qt. of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide. Bathe your cat in this mixture for several minutes, then rinse with water.

    Commercial Cleansers

    • Commercial cleansers that are designed to remove skunk odors from pets are very effective. These cleansers are available at most pet stores. You may also purchase them at your veterinarian's office.

    Veterinarian Care

    • If your cat is sprayed directly in the face, your pet may be suffering from painful eye, nose or throat irritation. Before bathing, gently wash its face with cool water. If the irritation persists, take it to the veterinarian for ointment or other medical treatment.
