How to Get Rid of Flatworms in a Cat

Cats are subject to infection from a number of parasitic worms. Flatworms, also known as liver fluke, can be acquired by ingesting lizards, fish or other aquatic animals that carry the worm. Flatworm infections can result in serious health complications for a cat. Once the parasite travels to the liver, it can cause severe tissue inflammation, pancreatitis and acute liver damage. Cats infected with flatworms can also suffer bile duct obstructions as the flatworms and their eggs travel through their bodies.

Take the animal to the vet for an accurate diagnosis. Flatworm infection symptoms such as fever, loss of appetite and abdominal distention can mirror the symptoms of other illnesses. The veterinarian will run a series of tests, possibly including x-rays and sonography to determine the presence of flatworms.

Administer the recommended deworming medication as directed by the veterinarian. Depending on the level of infection, the vet may prescribe other supportive medications such as antibiotics, vitamins and anti-emetics to curb vomiting.

Keep the cat indoors during treatment. At a minimum, restrict the cat's access to nearby bodies of water. Flatworm infections are commonly found in snails, frogs and lizards, which may be ingested by cats whose bodies, in turn, become host to the parasites.
