Cat Treatments
-
Use flea products designed for cats only. Visit your local pet store for a variety of flea sprays and shampoos made for cats. Oral flea-control tablets also are available from your veterinarian; he can counsel you about the best products for your pet. Though not as effective as other products, a flea comb, used in conjunction with other flea treatments such as shampoos or powders, will remove about 10 percent to 50 percent of fleas from your cat.
Home Treatments
-
Kill the fleas in your home once you have taken care of the fleas on your cat's body. Vacuum your entire house thoroughly to pick up any fleas that are on the floors or hiding in furniture or draperies. Empty the vacuum bag and place it in an outdoor trash can so fleas can't escape. Kill fleas on your cat's bedding by washing it in hot water, along with any throw rugs or blankets. If your flea situation is severe, consult a professional pest control company to treat your home. DIY products such as aerosol insect "bombs" can be purchased at a grocery or home-improvement store, but all people and animals need to leave your home while these are in use.
Yard Treatments
-
Kill fleas outdoors, especially if your cat is allowed to roam outside. If you have hired a professional pest company, they will spray your lawn, garden and any other outdoor areas for fleas, but you also can treat these areas yourself using a product that regulates insect growth. Spray the chemical around your entire home using a hose, and don't forget to treat buildings such as sheds and garages. Keep your cat and children indoors for at least two hours after spraying the lawn.
Long-Term Treatments
-
The Feline Advisory Board recommends monthly-application products such as Advocate and Advantage for Cats to kill fleas year-round. Your veterinarian also can perform an injection every six months to prevent fleas. Wash your cat's bedding frequently and vacuum on a daily basis to kill any fleas in the home. Treat your yard three times a year with an insect-growth regulator to keep fleas at bay. Also keep your grass trimmed short, as fleas like to hide in tall grass.
