How to Get Rid of Cat Breath

Chronic bad breath in your cat is known as halitosis, just as it is in humans. This is a medical condition that will likely require the intervention of your veterinarian. Once your vet prescribes a treatment course, which might involve medication or even removing teeth, there are things that you can do to help manage your cat's bad breath and prevent it from returning. Getting rid of the bad breath will make it easier to snuggle up with your cat and give the attention and affection that your cat deserves.

Instructions

    • 1

Bring your cat in to see a veterinarian. Your vet can determine if there are any more serious medical issues that need to be dealt. A foreign object in your cat's teeth, for example, can cause bad breath and will need to be removed by your vet.

    • 2

Give your cat any medications that your vet prescribes. Medication may be used to manage bacteria that's causing your cat's bad breath.

    • 3

Put tuna juice on your finger and rub it over your cat's gums. Tooth brushing will be needed to manage bad breath, and this will help make the process smoother. Continue doing this each day until your cat lets you touch its teeth and gums with no problem.

    • 4

Repeat the step above with a gauze around your finger. Keep using the tuna juice if it helps.

    • 5

Dip the pet toothbrush in tuna juice and let your cat lick it to get used to the feeling of bristles.

    • 6

Put some flavored toothpaste on your finger and rub it into your cat's mouth and gums to get used to the taste. Some pet toothpastes can be flavored like tuna or poultry.

Add the flavored toothpaste to the pet toothbrush. Start brushing your cat's teeth. At first, brush the front teeth only. After a few sessions, your cat should let you brush further back. Doing this once a day will help get rid of your cat's bad breath issue.
