How Do I Stop My Cat From Licking Her Belly Too Much?

If your cat has a sore or has recently had surgery involving stitches on the belly, licking might become a problem. When your cat licks a sore, stitches or other surgical area, the healing process will be significantly slowed and infection could result. Your cat's mouth and tongue are not sterile. To prevent infection and other issues, stop your cat from licking her belly too much.

Instructions

    • 1

Apply a bitter tasting product to your cat's belly. Some tastes, such as bitter apple, will keep the cat from licking. Do not apply any products to an open wound and only apply them under the direct supervision of your veterinarian.

    • 2

Place a bandage over the area your cat is licking. This will work for some cats, while others will tear it off.

    • 3

Get a neck collar from your veterinarian. While wearing a neck collar, your cat will not have access to its belly. Keep the collar on while the wound, stitches or surgery site heals.
