How to Coax a Cat Out of Shyness

Cats are naturally shy animals. Some cats become friendly household pets, while others shy away from human contact. A hesitant cat can be coaxed out of shyness. Cats taken away from their mothers before eight weeks old, cats without sufficient human contact, cats that come from shelters or cats that have suffered abuse tend to remain timid and need coaxing to overcome their timidity.

Instructions

Feed the cat by offering food from different distances. A shy and hungry cat will slowly run forward to reach the food. Offering food may encourage a cat to come out of her shell.

    • 2

Keep the cat carrier and cat bed in a separate room. This is important if there are other pets in the house. Put the bed and cat toys near the carrier. If you take the cat to the vet, the cat will get used to getting in the carrier and will not shy away from going outdoors in the carrier. Gently talk to your cat in her room as often as possible; this will help her get used to the human voice.

Play with the cat using toys that put a distance between you and the cat. Examples include fishing rod toys and cat charmers. Give the cat treats if the cat wins a game. Throw a treat ball with dried biscuits to reward the cat if she catches the ball.

Groom the cat often. Give the cat a gentle brushing every day to encourage the cat to trust you.
