How to Make the Right Nest for Your Expecting Kitty

Cats are considered members of the family in most homes. When a female cat is expecting a litter, you'll want to provide her a comfortable environment to welcome her kittens. Cats prefer to give birth in a familiar but somewhat private area of the home. To encourage her to give birth in a convenient place--rather than behind the washer and dryer, for example--build her a simple nesting box.

Things You'll Need

  • Cardboard box (wine box size)
  • Towels
  • Shredded newspaper
  • Box cutter

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a hole--large enough for your cat to pass through easily--in one side of the box. Start the hole 3 to 5 inches from the bottom of the box to create a barrier that prevents the kittens from crawling out.

    • 2

Place towels in the bottom of the box. Top with shredded newspaper.

    • 3

Fold the box-top panels shut. Leave the panels loose so you can access the box if needed.

    • 4

Place the nesting box in an area that is free of drafts and heavy foot traffic. However, do not place it in a room your cat is not accustomed to using.

    • 5

Set your cat near the box and give her loving attention, but do not force her into the box. Allow her to explore the box on her own.
