Cat Flu Homeopathic Remedies

Cat flu, otherwise known as upper respiratory tract infection or feline herpes, has similar symptoms and treatments to that of a common human cold. Symptoms often include a runny rose, cough, constipation and eye irritation. Homeopathic remedies can help combat these symptoms, and although they may not always cure cat flu completely, they can help alleviate some of your cats discomfort until you are able to visit a veterinary office. Homeopathic remedies have increased in popularity in recent years because of health concerns with traditional medicines along with high costs. These remedies focus on using common household ingredients, herbs and lifestyle changes to elicit a positive result.
  1. Selenium

    • Selenium is a trace mineral that is necessary to stay healthy. Only required in small amounts, this powerful antioxidant helps the cat's body fight off infection and disease. A deficiency in selenium may cause your pet to me more susceptible to cat flu or take longer to fight off the effects. This mineral has been shown to protect cell membranes, preserve tissue elasticity, and prevent dry skin. Selenium is most easily administered in capsule form, and commonly comes in antioxidant mixes that include vitamin A, B, C, and Echinacea. It is important to note that Selenium can be toxic in large doses, so use caution and consult a medical specialist for dose information before using it.

    Warm Water and Salt

    • Congestion is one of the most uncomfortable symptoms of cat flu, and it's important to help your cat breathe easier. By keeping your cat in the bathroom while you are showering, the steam will possibly alleviate some nasal congestion and help him breathe easier. You can also hold the cat up high where there is more steam. With a warm wash cloth dipped in warm saltwater, wipe your cats eyes in the morning, evening and after each meal. Wipe their nose and mouth as well. Peroxide instead of salt can be used as an alternative.

    Lomatium Dissectum

    • Lomatium is an anti-bacterial herb that was used extensively by native Americans of the Pacific northwest and northern Nevada. The root is used to create tinctures to be administered orally two to three times a day. Safe for both cats and humans, Lomatium's antiviral and immune-boosting properties make it a great tool in treating upper respiratory infections. Lomatium can be found in nature, but due to its similar appearance to poisonous plants in the Apiaceae family, it's highly recommended to allow a professional botanist to identify and harvest this useful herb.

    Lysine

    • Lysine, or sometimes seen as L-lysine, is an essential amino acid that a cat's body needs and usually receives in its food. Amino acids are necessary for growth and the conversion of fatty acids into energy. Lysine has been shown to help reduce the symptoms of feline herpes, including eye discharge, congestion and sneezing. Lysine is sold in capsule form and can be sprinkled on a cat's food. Half a capsule, twice daily is the recommended dose for an adult cat. Look for Lysine in your local health food store.
