How to Treat a Cat's Seasonal Allergies

Just like humans, cats can suffer from a wide variety of allergies. One of the most common allergies found in cats is to inhalants. Inhalants include airborne particles such as pollen, weeds, grass and mold, and are often seasonal; pollen allergies generally affect cats in the spring and summer. As a cat owner, it can be tough to watch your cat deal with the itchy skin, runny nose and watery eyes that you may also suffer from. Learn the signs and treatment of seasonal allergies in cats.

Limit your cat's exposure to the allergens. If your cat is allergic to grass, weed or tree pollens, keep it inside with the windows closed when the pollen counts are high during allergy season.

    • 2

Bathe your cat with a shampoo designed to soothe the skin and reduce itching, such as one made with oatmeal. Frequent bathing during allergy season reduces the amount of allergens that can be absorbed through the skin.

    • 3

Install air filters in your home to help remove any allergens in the air that have been brought inside.

    • 4

Visit your veterinarian. If your cat's seasonal allergies are severe, or do not improve, it may need other treatments. These include steroids, antigen injections to promote desensitization to allergens, medications, and prescription-strength creams and shampoos.
