Things You'll Need
- Sardines
- Cat food bowl
Instructions
Select the right kind of sardines. Packaged in a variety of liquids and flavored sauces including cream, tomato sauce and mustard, sardines packed in water are best for your cat. Sardines in oil will also work -- and your kitty gets an extra helping of oil. If your only choice is sardines in sauce, read the ingredients and make sure onion powder is not on the list; onions are toxic to cats. Rinse off the sauce before feeding the fish to your cat.
Add sardines to your cat's dinner. An adult cat only needs one sardine a day in order to receive all the omega-3 fatty acid it needs for optimum health. Place the sardine on top of your cat's everyday food or chop it up with the kibble.
Make a sardine meal. Instead of feeding your cat one sardine a day, you can designate one meal per week as "sardine dinner" and feed your cat all the sardines it would normally get in a week's time. Replace the dry kibble with sardines; don't worry about the bones -- they're soft enough for your cat to chew with no ill effects, and add necessary fiber to its diet.
