Instructions
Monitor your cat's activities. It is recommended that male cats stay indoors for eight to 14 days after surgery and have limited activity during this time. Activities including running and jumping can cause the stitches to tear, possibly resulting in a delayed recovery time. To prevent the cat from tearing its stitches, keep it isolated in a warm, quiet room where there is a limited amount of high furniture and play toys.
Administer provided medications to your cat if needed. Neutering can cause discomfort or infection, therefore veterinarians often provide pain relievers or antibiotics for after-care. The medicine should be used as directed. Often medication is not required unless symptoms warrant it.
Sit and pet your cat. The mix of medications, being in a secluded room and being without toys can be overwhelming for some cats. Therefore it is important to give your cat as much attention as possible during this time. Cats love being petted, and the attention will help relax it after the operation.
If you have multiple cats, keep the neutered cat away from the others for at least several days, until it starts to heal. This will prevent any unnecessary physical strain or a feeling of being threatened while the cat is vulnerable.
How to Make My Cat Comfortable After Surgery for Neutering
When a male cat is neutered, a large part of its reproductive organ is removed, preventing it from exemplifying sexually dimorphic behaviors of urine spraying, mounting and mating, which may result in unwanted litters. If you decide to have your cat neutered, it is important to learn how to take care of it for the short term when it comes home from the veterinary office.
