Feline Prostate Cancer Symptoms

Prostate cancer may occur in male cats, and is relatively more likely in adult cats who have not been neutered or spayed. Once present, feline prostate cancer is typically malignant, and prostate cancer surgery does not have a very good success rate. Neutering your cat is therefore a good preventative measure with regards to prostate cancer. Many symptoms of feline prostate cancer involve problems with urination.
  1. Urinary Problems

    • Although feline prostate cancer may occur with or without obvious symptoms, when symptoms are present they commonly involve the urinary system. Symptoms of feline prostate cancer relating to the bladder and urination include straining to urinate, needing to urinate more often than is typical and tinges of blood in the urine.

    Constipation

    • Feline prostate cancer can also affect your cat's excretion of solid waste. In some cases of feline prostate cancer, constipation can be an apparent symptom. You would notice your cat is constipated if he attempts but fails to defecate, or if it is obvious he is straining in order to achieve defecation. You might also notice that your cat holds his tail further away from his body than normal.

    Other Physical Symptoms

    • More general physical symptoms which may be warning signs of feline prostate cancer include a cat with fever or a sense of unusual lethargy. Unexplained weight loss could also be a symptom of prostate cancer in an otherwise healthy cat. Some cats may exhibit multiple symptoms of prostate cancer; others may demonstrate only a single symptom, or none at all.
