How to Give a Cat Medicine With a Syringe

Trying to give your cat liquid with a syringe is somewhat akin to trying to give a toddler a foul-tasting medicine. If you take the proper precautions you and your pet will quickly forget the experience and not be traumatized over it. Once your cat's health is restored, you will be glad you learned to do it successfully.

Instructions

    • 1

Position a large towel or small blanket on a flat surface, such as a table. Do not do this in an area where you normally cuddle with your cat, such as a bed or couch. The cat may start to avoid this area due to the experience.

    • 2

Use the plastic syringe to draw the correct dosage out of the medicine bottle. Place it near the towel or blanket.

    • 3

Place your cat in the middle of the blanket and swaddle him like a baby. You may need an assistant to do this. Leave room so that you can hold your cat by the scruff of its neck.

    • 4

Hold the cat by the scruff of the neck in a gentle, yet firm manner in your non-dominant hand.

    • 5

Pick up the syringe in your dominant hand and hold the cat still with your elbow and your arm of the dominant hand.

    • 6

Insert the syringe into the side of the cat's mouth, so that it is in the cheek area. Gently squeeze the syringe to allow a small portion of the medicine to enter the cat's mouth. Do not squeeze it in all at once or position it in the middle of its mouth. This makes it hard for the cat to swallow and may cause choking.

Remove the syringe from the cat's mouth once it is empty. Comfort your cat and praise it for being a good kitty.

    • 8

Place the cat on the floor before unwrapping it. The cat will most likely run away quickly. If you are able to hold it, reinforce the bad experience with an enjoyable one, such as brushing the cat or giving it a treat.
