Are Hydrangeas Poisonous to Cats?

Cats are curious creatures that tend to get into things they shouldn't, such as a prized plant or the chicken marinading on the kitchen counter. However, this curiosity can result in serious illness should the cat consume something that is dangerous to its health. Hydrangeas are poisonous to cats. Take the cat and the portion of the hydrangea it ate to a veterinarian as soon as possible.
  1. Identification

    • Hydrangeas are native plants in the Midwest, southern New England and the South. The shrubs can grow up to five feet in height and are favorite plants for flower arrangements due to their large, showy flowers.

    Toxicity of Hydrangeas

    • Hydrangeas contain cyanogenic glycosides. When these compounds are consumed and come in contact with stomach acids, they release cyanide.

Symptoms of Hydrangea Toxicity in Felines

    • According to the ASPCA, cats that consume some of the hydrangea plant may suffer from symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting and depression. Generally, cyanide poisoning is rare; most often it produces gastrointestinal upset.
