Things You'll Need
- Grooming brush
- Cat toys
- Healthy cat treats
Instructions
Brush your cat every day. Maine Coons have thick coats but they are low maintenance when groomed regularly, and their fur does not tangle unless it is neglected. Maines have a double coat, soft nearest the skin for warmth, and a weatherproof top coat to repel water. Grooming is more efficient with a special double coat brush, but a standard cat brush is also adequate. Both types of brush get rid of loose fur, reducing the risk of hairballs.
Check your cat's general health once a week. Claws, teeth, ears and fur need regular monitoring, and if you find anything unusual, seek the advice of a veterinarian. Healthy cats are happy cats, and a responsible pet owner may suspect their cat is sick if it is behaving strangely or suddenly becomes aggressive for no reason.
Play with your cat to keep it active. A cat is playful by nature and enjoys interaction with its owner. Throw a ball of string, a piece of scrunched-up paper or fluffy cat toy and your cat will have fun chasing it around a room or backyard. Domestic cats are not keen on water but Maine Coons are known to enjoy chasing droplets according to the Maine Coon Cat Club, especially if they find a dripping tap.
Reward your cat for good behavior instead of disciplining bad behavior. Cats learn quickly when treats are given as a reward for responding to their owner's commands. Choose healthy treats that are low in salt, and avoid those with a high fat content. Treats can be tasty, healthy and beneficial to your cats well-being if you choose a variety with added vitamins.
