How to Stop Cats From Spilling the Water Dish

Many cat owners will place a dish of water out for their cat only to return to a cat standing next to an empty water bowl. Unfortunately, the water from the bowl has been spilled onto the floor. Cats will sometimes move their bowls around because they are attracted to the motion of moving water. It is important for cats to drink water throughout the day to help them avoid dehydration. There are several ways to prevent them from knocking over a water dish.

Instructions

    • 1

Replace the bowl with a larger dog bowl. This will make it more difficult for the cat to tip it because it will be too large and heavy.

    • 2

Place a weighted water bowl onto the floor. The weight will make it hard for the cat to move or tip over the bowl while providing the cat with a water source.

    • 3

Offer the cat a pet fountain. The cat will more readily drink water from the fountain and will be amused by the moving water, which will replace the need for the cat to move the bowl for amusement.

Allow the cat to drink from a running faucet. Turn the faucet on for three to five minute intervals throughout the day and place the cat near it. This will eliminate the bowl all together. The bowl can also be kept inside of the sink, which will make it more difficult for the cat to knock it over.
