Types of worms
-
According to the ASPCA, there are 3 types of intestinal worms found in felines: roundworms, hookworms, and tapeworms. Roundworms are the most common type of worm, most often contracted by ingestion. Hookworms are very small, feed on blood and are contracted by ingestion or skin contact. Tapeworms typically cause vomiting and weight loss, and are contracted by ingesting an infected host animal.
Symptoms of worms
-
In some cases of worms, symptoms will be very obvious, while in other animals, it may be difficult to tell that something is wrong. The symptoms of infestation may vary by the type of worms your cat has, but the ASPCA explains that common symptoms include diarrhea, visible worms in the cat's stool, bloody stool, bloating or potbellied appearance, weight loss, vomiting, constipation, coughing, and difficulty breathing.
Worms in humans
-
The ASPCA warns that humans can contract worms from their cats. This can cause serious health issues, particularly in children. Left untreated, worms can actually cause blindness in humans, though not in cats. Always take your cat to the vet or see a doctor if you think that either of you may have worms.
