How to Treat a Cat Allergy With Sneezing

Cats with allergies display a number of symptoms including sneezing. Some other symptoms may include itching, watering eyes, vomiting, diarrhea and excessive licking or chewing on their paws. Like humans, cats can be allergic to nearly anything: food, dust, pollen and even fleas. When you suspect your cat has an allergy problem, it is important to get a diagnosis from a veterinarian. There are several different treatments that a vet may recommend to stop a cat from sneezing or exhibiting other signs of allergic reaction.

Prevent flea infestation. Use a flea comb regularly to remove fleas, eggs and larvae. Bathe your cat to get rid of any existing infestation. Use a veterinarian-approved flea preventative.

    • 2

Switch your litter box to a dust-free litter. Also choose a litter that is free of chemicals, which are often used for adding fragrance and color.

    • 3

Keep your home and your cat's area dust-free. Vacuum your home to remove dust and pollen from floors, carpet and upholstery. Wash your cat's bedding once weekly in hot water.

    • 4

Bathe your cat one to two times weekly to remove pollen and other allergens that may be causing allergic flareups. Use a veterinarian-approved shampoo that will not dry your cat's skin.

Take your cat to a veterinarian to get a prescription antihistamine if home treatment is ineffective. Veterinarians may prescribe an antihistamine, cortisone or steroids to control your cat's allergy symptoms.
