How to Check If Your Cat Has Worms

Household cats can often be afflicted with certain intestinal parasites. Cats can get worms through contact with or ingestion of feces or soil contaminated with worm larvae. Contact with infected fleas, lice and rodents that are hosts for intestinal parasites can also give cats worms. Worms also are passed to kittens from the mother. There are ways pet owners can check whether a cat has worms so that it can be properly treated.

Instructions

    • 1

Watch for symptoms that are often linked to certain worms. These symptoms include bloody stool, vomiting, diarrhea, coughing, constipation, weight loss, trouble breathing, and bloating.

    • 2

Look at the cat's stool or vomit for any long spaghetti-like white material, which is usually a sign of roundworms.

    • 3

Check the cat's anus or stool for any small segments that look similar to grains of white rice which is a sign of tapeworms. The segments will often be moving.

    • 4

Wear gloves and use a stick-like a bamboo bbq skewer to check the cat's stool for any signs of worms. Also, search the cat's bedding and play areas which could have evidence of hookworms, tapeworms or roundworms. Dispose the used gloves and stick after inspection.
