Homeopathic Herbs for Cats With Diarrhea

Cats get diarrhea for a variety of reasons. Some cats have sensitive stomachs and react to stress or a change in diet. Others have a condition such as irritable bowel syndrome, which makes diarrhea an ongoing problem. Homeopathic herbs can help you combat your cat's diarrhea and ease its discomfort.
  1. Slippery Elm

    • Bark from the slippery elm tree contains mucilage, which when dried, powdered and mixed with water becomes gel-like and coats and soothes the digestive system. According to veterinarian Jean Hofve, it is safe and non-toxic for cats. Give affected cats 1/4 tsp. slippery elm powder with cold water for every 10 lbs. of weight.

In "The New Natural Cat," Anitra Frazier gives a recipe for slippery elm syrup. Place 1/2 cup cold water and 1 tsp. of slippery elm powder in a saucepan. Whip as it comes to a boil, then cool and refrigerate. Give 1 tsp. to the cat before each meal to combat diarrhea.

    Licorice

    • Licorice promotes wellness in the intestines by increasing blood flow and decreasing muscle spasms. Deglycyrrhizinated licorice is an extract from licorice that is more commonly used because it doesn't have the side effects on the adrenal glands that straight licorice does. Neutered cats do not seem to have the adrenal side effects that non-neutered cats do, so use either form on them.

Follow the recommendations of your vet when using licorice. If you are using an over-the-counter supplement, follow the directions on the bottle because they come in different concentrations.

    Other Herbs

    • There are several other homeopathic herbs that help cats with diarrhea. Most come mixed in formulas, so they work together for better effectiveness. Chamomile is an example of a homeopathic herb that combats diarrhea. It supports the cat's immune system and helps with inflammation. Consult your vet for other options.
