Effects
-
An expectorant works by helping to drain mucus buildup in the lungs and airways by thinning the mucus. Expectorants also possess soothing properties that help to ease the irritation in the airways.
Types
-
A vet might recommend administering a human cough syrup with the expectorant guaifenesin and dextromethorphan in very small doses, but never syrup with acetaminophen. Homeopathic medicines based on herbs, like plantago lanceolata, also perform the same functions.
Considerations
-
Always consult a vet before administering any type of medicine to a cat, including homeopathic medicines. Using a cough medicine without consulting a vet may only treat symptoms while a serious condition goes undiagnosed.

Expectorant for Cats
